More young people with eye problems

AN INCREASING NUMBER of young people are being affected by eye problems.

p>Senator Kerryann Ifill spoke to the issue yesterday at a community outreach day to mark the month of the disabled.

As she sat with members of the National United Society of the Blind (NUSB) in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital’s Eye Clinic, Ifill told the media that in general, Barbados had a high incidence of glaucoma and diabetes.

“This [diabetes] leads to diabetic retinopathy, so we are seeing a high number of persons who are manifesting with diabetes earlier and with that you have the additional complications,” she said.
