The Barbados Council for the Disabled (BCD) entered into an agreement with the Latter Days Saints (LDS) Charities to implement a project that provides free wheelchairs, walkers and crutches to persons with disabilities who are in need. However before we could begin, as the recipients of the equipment, the Barbados Council for the Disabled had to offer a special Level 11 Training Course on Assessment of Users that would require the wheelchairs.
The extensive one week Training was conducted by Specialist in the field of Wheelchair Assessments from overseas. This included components in the following areas but not limited to: Wheelchair parts, Introduction to assessment, Disabilities, Transfers, Posture, Sitting balance, Sensation, Pressure sores and pressure relief, measuring, Mobility skills, Basic wheelchair adjustment, User care and maintenance, Fitting, user instruction and assessment.
Following the Training in September 2016, Assessors were scheduled and a lengthy list of potential clients for the wheelchairs began to grow as information was shared via the media and through government agencies and organisations representing persons with disabilities.
With the project now into its third month the Council is well past its half way mark of distribution of these demanding equipment to the benefit of a variety of Barbadians with disabilities.
In order to qualify for a Wheelchair, walker or Crutches the potential user must first call into the Barbados Council for the Disabled at 427-8136 to register their name and a follow up call will be made to schedule an assessment appointment.
