The Barbados Council for the Disabled (BCD) today officially launched its newly acquired accessible bus, strengthening the Council’s ability to provide safe and reliable transportation for persons with disabilities across Barbados.
The new vehicle was made possible through the generous financial support of The Sandy Lane Charitable Trust, The Maria Holder Memorial Trust, CIBC Caribbean and CGI, whose collective contributions enabled the Council to replace one of its ageing accessible buses.
For more than two decades, the BCD has provided accessible transportation to members of the disability community, including children travelling to and from school, as well as persons requiring transportation for appointments, programmes and other essential activities.
BCD President Patricia Padmore-Blackman expressed the Council’s sincere appreciation to the donors, noting that accessible transportation remains an important part of enabling persons with disabilities to participate more fully and independently in society.
The ceremony was blessed by Canon Noel Burke and attended by representatives of the donor organisations, members and supporters of the Council, along with His Excellency Edmund Hinkson and The Honourable Adrian Forde, Minister of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs.
The BCD said the new bus represents much more than the replacement of a vehicle—it represents mobility, independence, inclusion and continued access to community life for persons with disabilities.
The Council continues its efforts to strengthen its accessible transportation service and will host its Chic n’ Charitable fundraising event in November to raise funds towards replacing its remaining older accessible bus.
