The memory of one of the most notable alumni of The UWI Cave Hill Campus was honoured on Monday, August 10th when the Barbados Council for the Disabled (BCD) held a tree planting ceremony at the Campus in tribute to the late Kregg Nurse, as part of its ongoing 50th anniversary celebrations.
Nurse lived with muscular dystrophy, a genetic condition that causes progressive muscle weakness and loss of muscle mass over time.
He graduated with a degree in Accounting in 1997, becoming the first person with a disability to graduate from Cave Hill with honours. After completing his studies, Nurse qualified as a Certified General Accountant and worked at the accounting firm Ernst & Young. He passed away at age 27 in 2004.
The shaddock tree was planted to the right of the Faculty of Medical Sciences Laboratory and Teaching Complex in a ceremony attended by members of Nurse’s family; his close friend and Human Rights Commissioner in the Office of the Attorney General, Kerryann Ifill; staff of the BCD; and campus representatives.
This event was part of the BCD’s 50 Trees for 50 Years project to mark its golden jubilee.

Ever heard the saying “it’s better to give than to receive” well that also applies to time. By volunteering we support an organization or cause and make a great difference in our communities. It’s also a great way to meet new people and learn about the challenges they face daily. Consider giving more than just money, give your time !
